History

The Jesup station is now no more than a platform without a shelter, after the station was severely damaged by a fire in February of 2003. The building is still standing, but not in use. The city is planning to repair the platform and will rebuild the station if state funding is provided.

Jesup is the seat of Wayne County and is located 40 miles from the Atlantic coast. It was incorporated as a city on October 24, 1870. Wayne County itself had been created after the Creek Indians ceded the land in 1802 as part of the Wilkinson Treaty. There is some doubt as to whom the city is named for—possibly General Thomas S. Jesup from the American Indian War, who captured Chief Osceola in 1837, or possibly for a notable railroad financier. The town began as Station Number 6 on the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad, but grew into a city primarily through the efforts of its first mayor, Willis Clary. Clary is credited with convincing the Macon and Brunswick Railroad to locate its tracks so they crossed at Jesup.

The city’s growth was initially tied to the railroad. Later, the economic base came to include cotton, tobacco, corn, pecans, and livestock. In areas along the Altamaha River, turpentine and lumber were important products. Today, timber for paper production and cotton remain the primary products of the area.

Amtrak does not provide ticketing or baggage services at this facility.

Jesup is served by two daily trains.
