Route Performance

Amtrak is dedicated to operating dependable, on-time trains. However, Amtrak trains outside the Northeast operate on tracks owned, maintained and dispatched by "host" railroads other than Amtrak. Host railroad operations and maintenance can delay or disrupt passenger rail service.
Delays can be caused by the host railroads, third parties or Amtrak itself. Typically 80 percent of delay minutes are caused by host railroads, and include interference by freight trains, track condition slow orders, signal troubles and other problems. Because Amtrak trains have federally-mandated dispatching preference over freight traffic, Amtrak carefully monitors the on-time performance of its trains and the causes of delay. Amtrak works with the responsible host railroad to improve or eliminate the causes of delay.
Amtrak-responsible delays include train mechanical problems and delays incurred prior to departure. Third party delays are usually weather-related.
