Making Rail Stations Welcoming to All

Why Stations Matter

We recently spoke with Mercy Rushing, Community/Economic Development Director in Mineola, Texas about the redevelopment project for the Mineola rail station.

"The city is proud of its railroad heritage," according to Mercy Rushing, Community/Economic Development Director and a major leader of the redevelopment project for the rehabilitation of Mineola's railroad station. It is important to preserve history for future generations. The station is important for continued economic growth of the city and Amtrak ridership. Ms. Rushing believes that the investment in the station shows Amtrak that Mineola is a full partner and that the citizens of Mineola are "hungry for transportation choices and Amtrak is one of those choices." The restaurants and merchants in close proximity to the station also benefit from the favorable Texas Eagle mealtime schedule. The newly renovated depot is beneficial for all concerned, as it is now a destination unto itself. It will continue to help support the local downtown commercial community, and provide a beautiful and accessible station for all of our community residents and visitors.
